Established in 1907 Ruijing Hospital was originally called Guangci Hospital. It is a general teaching hospital under the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine with a land area of 0.12 million M2, a construction area of over 0.15 million M2 and a landscaped area covering nearly 30% of the total area. At present there are 1774 sick beds and a staff of over 3300 persons, among whom 507 persons hold senior titles. The Hospital owns a large number of medical experts who enjoy relatively high celebrity both at home and abroad such as Chen Zhu, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wang Zhengyi, Chen Saijuan, members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and others. The hospital has 34 clinical departments, 7 departments of medical technology; 9 institutes (endocrionology, hematology, traumatology and orthopedics, burns, hypertension, digestive surgery, neurology, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases and respiratory disease); 11 laboratories, among which one is a State key laboratory (Key Laboratory of Medical Genome), 2 key laboratories of Ministry of Public Health (Key Laboratory of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases of Ministry of Public Health and Key Laboratory of Human Genome of Ministry of Public Health); 3 clinical medical centers (Shanghai Micro-Traumatic Surgery Clinical Medical Center, Shanghai Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Clinical Medical Center and Shanghai Hematology Clinical Medical Center); 8 State bases for Clinical Research of Drugs; 3 key disciplines of State Ministry of Education, 6 key disciplines of Shanghai Education Commission and 3 leading disciplines of medicine of Shanghai Municipality.
Since successfully rescuing Qiu Caikang in the 50s of 20th century, Ruijin Hospital has always stayed at the world’s advanced level in the field of extensive burns treatment. In the 70s it took the lead at home in carrying out heart and liver transplantations and in the 90s made tremendous progress in research of leukemia molecular biology and its clinical practice. In 21st century organ transplantations which are approaching perfection with each passing day have made many patients regard here as an oasis of life. As a result the hospital has won the honor of the titles of Advanced Collective of the National Health System (for 6 times), 100 Good Hospitals Nationwide, Advanced Collective for Establishing Civilized Industries Nationwide, Study Society of Advanced Ideological and Political Work of The Health System Nationwide; Civilized Unit of Shanghai Municipality (for 9 times); Model Workers’ Center Nationwide; Civilization of Youth Nationwide, Unit for Establishing “May 4th” Red Banner League Organization Nationwide and others.
Ruijin Hospital regards its achievements and honor as a motive force. In order to further meet the market requirements the Hospital actively develops high-grade, refined and advanced therapeutic technologies such as microtraumatic operations, arthroscope operations, cardiovascular Intervening therapy, ophthalmologic quasi-molecular laser operations and so on and implements multidisciplinary or cross-disciplinary consultation system by making full use of the comprehensive therapeutic advantages of the Hospital so as to increasingly raise its therapeutic level. In the meantime the Hospital has positioned its development target on a research-orientated hospital and has been based on clinical practice and intensification of scientific research to bear more clinical new results for the people’s health with the aid of the 9 research institutes at the municipal level and the special features of such disciplines as internal kidney, internal digestion, endocrinology, hypertension, trauma of traditional Chinese medicine, acute necrotic pancriatitis and reproductive health, especially the advantages of scientific research of the State Key Laboratories. The Hospital continues to deepen humanized services, pushing the “Three Hearts’ Project” of “setting the patients’ minds at rest with excellent medical treatment, satisfying the patients with first-class services and easing the patients with graceful environment”, winning the trust of the society and the patients with warm, easy and rapid, excellent and good-quality services and promoting the development of the two civilization constructions of the Hospital.
Ruijin Hospital is the largest clinical teaching base of the Shanghai Second Medical University. Ruijing Clinical Medical College has Clinical Medical Department, Medical Laboratory Department, Senior Nursing Department and Senior Nursing Training Center. Each year it undertakes the teaching work for over 1000 medical students of different school systems and has become the cradle for training talents for medical circles.
In recent years Ruijin Hospital has won over 300 scientific research projects of all kinds, including major projects of State Natural Science Fund, key projects, general projects, State Science and Technology Commission 863 Project, S863 Project, 973 Project, Climbing Program, State “8th 5-Year-Plan” Project for Tackling Key Problems and “9th 5-Year-Plan” Project for Tackling Key Problems, scientific research projects of Ministry of Public Health, State Education Commission Projects for Overseas Students, scientific research projects at the municipal level and other major projects. The Hospital now has 29 stations for master students, 21 stations for Ph.D. students, 12 specialty points for post-doctorial mobile stations, 150 master directors and 59 Ph.D. directors. The scientific research and technical talents of the Hospital make up quite a proportion in Fund for State Outstanding Talents, Training Fund of State Education Commission for Talents Transcending the Century, Shanghai Venus Plan, Shanghai Postvenus Plan, Shanghai Dawn Plan and Plan for 100 Excellent Leading Persons of Disciplines Transcending the Century of the Health System of Shanghai. The Hospital has also won a series of international prizes with very high gold content such as Evens Prize of U.S. Burns Association, Vikt International Burns Prize of Italy, Cathrine Prize of Cancer of U.S., Brubah Prize of Cancer of Switzerland, Prix de l’Oise from La League Nationale Contre Cancer ( France ) and prix de Simone & Cino del Duca (France), He Liang He Li Fund Technology Prize of Hong Kong and others. In order to introduce advanced technology and equipment Ruijin Hospital also actively carries out foreign exchanges and coordination, has extensive ties with such countries as France, the U.S., Britain, Canada, Belgium, Japan, Australia and such regions and organizations as Hong Kong, Taiwan and World Health Organization and has established many items of cooperation in scientific research.
On 4th of August 1999 in order to implement our country’s spirit of health reform and explore the new model of hospital development under market economical conditions and realize the aim of “providing relatively excellent services with relatively cheap prices”, Ruijin Hospital took the lead in reorganizing assets with part of medical institutions and established Shanghai Ruijin Hospital Group, initially realizing medical assets reorganization across areas, industries, grades and departments so as to gradually form a regional medical health center with Ruijin Hospital as its core. For four years Ruijin Hospital and its group subordinate hospital branch, Luwan Branch, Minhang Hospital and Taizhou Central Hospital have all achieved significant economic and social returns.
On 25th of October 2002 Ruijin Hospital again took a solid step in the exploration of the model of scientific research work, creatively establishing at home the “Institute of Biologic Medicine”, thereby forming a new pattern of large-scale scientific research and realizing the overall creation and innovation of scientific research system, employment system and scientific research etc.. This research institute takes the research strength of Ruijin Hospital as the main force, uniting such scientific research units as Shanghai Life Science Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Health Science Center of the Shanghai Second Medical University and State South Center of Human Genome. It is the first research and development institution of taking the hospital as the principal part and integrating life science with clinical medicine. The employment principle of “seeking only the useful professionals instead of possessing the professionals” followed by the Institute truly embodies the “flexible flow” of the professionals, enabling more scientific research personnel to have a stage and space for showing their talent.
In 2006 the person-times for outpatient department and emergency department of Ruijin Hospital reached over 2.03million, the number of the patients who underwent surgery was 2.34 ten thousand person-times, the number of the patients discharged from hospital was 5.99 ten thousand person-times, the days for hospitalization was averaged 10.04 days.
